Faramir becomes Prince of Ithilien (estimated date)

Event Type: Political

Age: 3rd Age - Ring War

Date: May 2, 3019

Description:

Faramir, Steward to King Elessar, son of Denethor II, 26th Steward of Gondor, and Finduilas of Dol Amroth, becomes the first Prince of Ithilien:
Faramir... succeeded by right on the death of his father, but in the same year surrendered rod and rule to the King Elessar, and so was the last Ruling Steward. He retained the title of Steward, and became Prince of the restored land of Ithilien, dwelling in the Hills of Emyn Arnen beside Anduin.

The Peoples of Middle-Earth, HoME Vol 12, Part 1, Ch 7, The Heirs of Elendil: The Ruling Stewards of Gondor

And Aragorn gave to Faramir Ithilien to be his princedom, and bade him dwell in the hills of Emyn Arnen within sight of the City. 1

'For,' said he, 'Minas Ithil in Morgul Vale shall be utterly destroyed, and though it may in time to come be made clean, no man may dwell there for many long years.'

The Return of the King, LoTR Book 6, Ch 5, The Steward and the King

[To] be Prince of Ithilien, the greatest noble after Dol Amroth in the revived Númenórean state of Gondor, soon to be of imperial power and prestige, was not a 'market-garden job' as you term it. Until much had been done by the restored king, the P. of Ithilien would be the resident march-warden of Gondor, in its main eastward outpost — and also would have many duties in rehabilitating the lost territory, and clearing it of outlaws and orc-remnants, not to speak of the dreadful vale of Minas Ithil (Morgul). I did not, naturally, go into details about the way in which Aragorn, as King of Gondor, would govern the realm. But it was made clear that there was much fighting and in the earlier years of A.'s reign expeditions against enemies in the East. The chief commanders, under the King, would be Faramir and Imrahil; and one of these would normally remain a military commander at home in the King's absence.

Notes
The date is an estimate, selected to lie between the Crowning of King Elessar and the departure of Éomer for Rohan.
There are few details about the home of Faramir and Éowyn in Emyn Arnen:

1[As] the Prince of Ithilien [Faramir] dwelt in a fair new house in the Hills of Emyn Arnen, whose gardens devised by the Elf Legolas were renowned.

Mr. Meriadoc... has visited the Lady Éowyn in her white house.
