Iron Hills

Region: Rhovanion/Misty Mtns

Location: In the Wilderland, east of Erebor at about the same latitude.

Description: The Iron Hills are a chain running east-west; from Tolkien's maps the length of the chain is about 200 miles (322 km).

Iron Hills in the Third Age:

2590 Durin's folk are driven from the Grey Mountains by dragons. Grór, Dáin's son, went away with many followers to the Iron Hills; but Thrór, Dáin's heir, with Borin his father's brother and the remainder of the people returned to Erebor.
2799 Battle of Nanduhirion before the East-gate of Moria. A group of dwarves from the Iron Mountains under Náin turn the tide of battle against the orcs. Náin is killed; his son Dáin Ironfoot returns to the Iron Hills.
2941 The Battle of the Five Armies in Dale. Dáin of the Iron Hills brings his warriors at Thorin's summoning. On Thorin's death Dáin becomes King under the Mountain (Dáin II).

Trade was an important link between Erebor and the Iron Hills. The dwarves in Erebor " … made not only things of wonder and beauty but weapons and armour of great worth; and there was great traffic of ore between them and their kin in the Iron Hills."
