Bywater

Type: Cities, Towns, Settlements

Region: Bree/The Shire

Location: Bywater is a village in the Shire, just south of the stream called The Water. It is at the point where The Water widens out into the Bywater Pool that the village sits.

Description: Prior to the changes wrought in the Shire by Lotho Sackville-Baggins and Sharkey, the village had a "pleasant row of old hobbit-holes in the bank on the north side of the Pool" with "little gardens that used to run down bright to the water’s edge." An avenue of trees had stood on the north side where the Hobbiton road ran close the The Water.
By the time of the Scouring the hobit-holes in the north bank of the pool were deserted and their gardens neglected. The row of trees had been removed and replaced by "a whole line of the ugly new houses all along Pool Side". Some of the village's older houses had been removed or burned down.

The road through the village was the site of the Battle of Bywater. The village is also the home of the Cotton family.
