Description:
"Very tall they were, and the Lady no less tall than the Lord; and they were grave and beautiful. They were clad wholly in white; and the hair of the Lady was of deep gold, and the hair of the Lord Celeborn was of silver long and bright; but no sign of age was upon them, unless it were in the depths of their eyes; for these were keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound, the wells of deep memory."

- The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two, Chapter VII The Mirror of Galadriel

Celeborn = celeb (silver) + ornē (tree). This was the name of the Tree of Tol Eressëa. Later, ornā (uprising, tall) was used instead of ornē to refer to a person's name; ornā is also a reference to Celeborn's height.

- Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth, Part Two, IV - The History of Galadriel and Celeborn

* Notes on dates:
Depending on the varied versions of his background, the timing implies that he was from the time of the Trees.

"...but after the passing of Galadriel in a few years Celeborn grew weary of his realm and went to Imladris to dwell with the sons of Elrond."

The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King, Appendix B

It was probably at Great Smials that The Tale of Years was put together, with the assistance of material collected by Meriadoc. Though the dates given are often conjectural, especially for the Second Age, they deserve attention. It is probable that Meriadoc obtained assistance and information from Rivendell, which he visited more than once. There, though Elrond had departed, his sons long remained, together with some of the High-elven folk. It is said that Celeborn went to dwell there after the departure of Galadriel; but there is no record of the day when at last he sought the Grey Havens, and with him went the last living memory of the Elder Days in Middle-earth.

The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Prologue, Note on the Shire Records

In one version of their background, Amroth was Celeborn and Galadriel's son
