Places in Middle-earth
Haysend
Type: Fortresses, Towers, Defenses
Region: Bree/The Shire
Location: A spot at the southern tip of the High Hay in Buckland, near the confluence of the Withywindle and the Brandywine rivers.
Description:
[Buckland] was originally unprotected from the East; but on that side they had built a hedge: the High Hay.... It ran all the way from Brandywine Bridge, in a big loop curving away from the river, to Haysend (where the Withywindle flowed out of the Forest into the Brandywine)....
The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 1, Ch 5, A Conspiracy Unmasked
'That... is the line of the Withywindle. It comes down out of the Downs and flows south-west through the midst of the Forest to join the Brandywine below Haysend. We don't want to go that way!'
The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 1, Ch 6, The Old Forest
Etymology
The word is derived from hay 'fence' (not 'grass').... Compare High Hay, Hay Gate, Haysend, place-names in Buckland.
