Timeline Event

Ar-Adûnakhôr begins to persecute the Faithful (estimated date)

Event Type: Cultural/Social

Age: 2nd Age - Rings

Year: 2899

Description:
An early event in the prelude to the Downfall of Númenor; see that entry for an overview:

In those days the Shadow grew deeper upon Númenor; and the lives of the Kings of the House of Elros waned because of their rebellion, but they hardened their hearts the more against the Valar.

The Silmarillion, Akallabêth

Ar-Adûnakhôr ... was the first King to take the sceptre with a title in the Adûnaic tongue; though out of fear ... a name in Quenya [(Tar-Herunúmen)] was inscribed in the Scrolls. But these titles were held by the Faithful to be blasphemous, for they signified "Lord of the West," by which title they had been wont to name one of the great Valar only, Manwë in especial. In this reign the Elven-tongues were no longer used, nor permitted to be taught, but were maintained in secret by the Faithful; and the ships from Eressëa came seldom and secretly to the west shores of Númenor thereafter.

Unfinished Tales, Part 2, Ch 3, The Line of Elros, Kings of Númenor

And indeed Ar-Adûnakhôr began to persecute the Faithful and punished those who used the Elven-tongues openly; and the Eldar came no more to Númenor.

The Return of the King, LoTR Appendix A, Annals of the Kings and Rulers: Númenor

... [the] hearts [of the Faithful] were sorely tried between their loyalty to the House of Elros and their reverence of the appointed Powers. But worse was yet to come.

The Silmarillion, Akallabêth

[Note: the date is an estimate, set to follow the event Ar-Adûnakhôr becomes King of Númenor.]
