This was very impressive. Gandalf's inventory. Nothing included that we don't already know about, and I can argue both for and against that as a virtue. You use the known artifacts beautifully to lay his thoughts open to us.
Of course I was interested in Gandalf's allusion to trying to redeem the Orcs. A story forthcoming there, perhaps?

I loved this one in the reviewing and it seems even better now. And I agree with thelauderdale... fascinating to speculate on Gandalf's "seeing" Orcs for what they once were... might have been... a theme I am exploring too. Thanks for a wonderful insightful piece! Aiwendiel

Thanks, Aiwendile and thelauderdale! Gandalf's attempt to redeem early orcs would be an interesting plot bunny indeed, but I don't see me writing it. It's up for grabs. ;-)
