so the road goes ever on and on... and I cannot tell which way this will go. But the enormous skill of your story telling takes me right back to Tolkien again, the sense of otherness right on our doorstep and if we just stray a little off the beateb track I feel I could find Tom's house. The style is absolutely right, away from the great epic style of earlier chapters and back to the more story-telling style when we are in the Shire, or on its borders. Nice early Christmas present but I am hoping for another before the New Year. It feels like its winding to a close and there's one more as you say.

Ziggy, thanks for your steadfast attention and comments. Yes, the story is much quieter now, only the interior adventure we all have to live. As to how it will turn out, I think I know, but I've been wrong before when my characters do something unexpected right in front of me. No promises on the next one before the new year... but I will do my best!

It would be good to make his peace within the Shire ere he goes, though. I rejoice the choice is given him, at least.
