Another superb chapter- after all the battle and action, this brims with tension and pain and sorrow. The action Theodred takes is so convincingly portrayed and Aragorn's guilt and grief. I like too the way you portray Gimli as a wise and trusted companion, not just comic as he sometimes is.

Indeed, a terrible victory, one filled with far more pain than what would have been known had Sam not had that bit of rope with him, but one in which the pain is mitigated by reason in the end. I certainly hope Theodred takes to heart Aragorn's advice.

You mean I get to say it again, so quickly? "Eomer...you moron!" (Theodred too, of course.)
Coming back to this story after such a long absence, I'm impressed with your no holds barred approach in these past few chapters. Good people die, and in the wake of tragedy, heroic characters betray the best of their ideals, sullying themselves in ways that Tolkien never allowed them to do in his tales. I found this heartbreakingly realistic.

Thanks, 'thelauderdale', for your kind comments. I always felt that too many of the Professor's characters were a bit too flawlessly noble. One of my secondary explorations in this work is to bend JRR's stereotypes -- not break them, just bend them. Oh, and, Eomer won't disappoint you in future chapters. He's not done being moronic quite yet.
