And Sam's hardheadedness and kindness together showing to advantage again. I was getting a distinct feeling of The Magician's Apprentice as the water was rising....

The Sorceror's Apprentice? Oh, but now that you mention it, yes--that is appropriate!
It was fun to set something earlier in their lives and see Sam as one of the main characters rather than Frodo here. Although my beloved young Master of the Hill does make his appearances....
