Very dark, but very well-written. The images are clear and chilling, but the redemptive final drabble left me with a feeling of hope despite the despair in the preceding ones: No matter how badly the Numenoreans messed up, they still belonged to the One.
I think what added the greatest depth for me, and was most disturbing, was the way that Sauron facilely incorporated warped Truth into his fabricated religion.
