I agree that this is a great story - usual for Jael! but is Legolas' mother's death really canon? Of course, there is no Queen of Mirkwood mentioned in The Hobbit, but did JRRT actually write that she died? In HOME, perhaps?

No, Tolkien never wrote that Legolas's mother died or left Middle-earth. I merely infer from the fact that Bilbo and the Dwarves didn't notice any Elvenqueen at the feast in the forest (a ceremonial occasion) there is some reason for that lack. She could, of course, have been washing her hair that night, but I have extrapolated a story-verse in which she died. It isn't canon -- just compatible with what was written.
