General Comment

RiverOtter:

Thanks for your comment and kind words for "Contrapunto." The Aragorn-Denethor relationship is quite fascinating, with lots of room for interesting stories. I plan to write more. "Theme and Variations" is a sort of sequel, about Faramir and Aragorn.

Ch. 1: The Steward's Heir

An excellent story showing the depth of the relationship between Aragorn and Denethor.  The bits between Aragorn and Gandalf are well done as well.

Ch. 1: The Steward's Heir

'He was known to pursue the occasional affair with a woman, always one of noted beauty. He had a reputation for being very kind to these women and never speaking ill of them; good feelings, unusually, seemed to prevail when these affairs ended. That frequent source of quality information, a disgruntled woman, was not available in the captain's case. However, he showed no interest whatsoever in marriage. This was in itself strange. What easier way for a foreigner to establish himself among Gondor's elite? True, he would not be an eligible husband for the daughters of the cream of the aristocracy. But there were many families of the lesser nobility that would be delighted with such a son-in-law.'

OK, now this story is a gap filler,  but who will fill this gap?

My birthday is in August, I know what i will be asking for.

Ch. 1: The Steward's Heir

Hard to gain information from women who appear content with the relationship they've had, and the plan to spy on him when feverish backfired.  Excellent sparring Thorongil has displayed, both with blade and wit.

Ch. 2: The King's Heir

An interesting look at Denethor and Thorongil during the latter's years of service to Gondor.  I like Aragorn's sad, frustrated admission that he admired Denethor, and that under different circumstances they might have been friends.

Ch. 2: The King's Heir

This story is great. You portay just the right mix of nobility and resentment on the part of Denethor towards Thorongil. However I am a litlle confused. In the last paragraph you say, that Thorongil leaves Gondor a few weeks after the council meeting. Wasn't Aragorn supposed to batlle the corsairs first, which would take two years according to what he said to Gandalf not long before the council meeting? I'm probably missing something. Anyway it is a great story either way.

Ch. 2: The King's Heir

The kidnapping of a young Ranger was pretty nasty!  I'm not too pleased with Denethor right now.  Although what was done was well within his capabilities, I suppose.
