Ad Sum

Ch. 1: Ad Sum

Very chilling. I always wondered about the aftermath of the Battle of Pelannor Fields and Black Gate and how Minas Tirith went about rebuilding itself about that. It always seemed to me that Tolkien glosses over the details about the recovery and charges straight into the coronation and wedding. Surely there must have been time in between to grieve properly before the city could rouse itself to celebrate.

Ch. 1: Ad Sum

Dear Rani,

It always seemed to me that Tolkien glosses over the details about the recovery and charges straight into the coronation and wedding.

There is that silence, with only the song to indicate the enormity of the mark this battle had left on the people of Minas Tirith, or anyone who took part in that defense. I suppose one can blame it on the need to lay out the reasoning for taking the war to Sauron's doorstep, and then actually getting there. And thematically, after the Black Gate, the story has hit the "Thank God we're going to live!" stage so the rest isn't mentioned. On the plus side, it leaves room for fanauthors to sneak about in and scribble between the lines.

Thanks very much for dropping a note about the story. I'm glad it managed to be a bit creepy. :)

Take care,

Dwim
