Hi Iel,
Glad you liked the chapter. Yes, Finduilas has been itching to take a chunk out of Maiaberiel for a while.
What was the matter with the guys? They really want the roads rebuilt, and they are being told no. It is a rebuke of them both, especially by Borondir who is basically refusing to believe Thorongil's word about the garrisons even when Denethor vouches for him.
Also, they both know that this means Denethor will have to leave the City, which means leaving Finduilas alone. She's not in on the secret about Malantur, and they don't want to tell her. So, they are both sitting there, feeling glum, worrying about roads, wars and killer King's Men. Good thing they had a party to go to. ;-)

Hi Anna,
Isn't the microscope cool? Since they obviously had technology for things like telescopes and understood optics fairly well, why wouldn't the Numenoreans have microscopes? They are an Age of Enlightenment invention, after all, and I've always pegged Numenor as being early AoE in terms of technology.
I have another artifact coming up in a later chapter that also is pretty cool (no more or it will be a spoiler!) and in the last few days, I've been writing about Denethor closely examining a bridge that has stood since before the founding of Gondor.
