One breath, two breaths

 Bilbo Baggins watches as his mother Belladonna breathes her last.

 Three breaths, fourth breaths

 He wishes he could do something, wishes he could say something…

 Five breaths, six breaths

 …but he knows it is hopeless.

 Once upon a time she was strong and sure…

 Now old age has made her sad and sour and sorrowful.

 Seven breaths

 Bilbo watches as his mother breathes her last.

 Once upon a time she had dark hair and bright eyes and fair skin…

 Eight breaths


 Tears run down his cheeks.

 Nine, ten

 He will never be the same again...
