1. Happy Ever After

"And where do you think you're going?"

 The voice catches her unawares.

She turns to see her husband standing in the courtyard, a faint smile playing upon his lips. The question baffles her.

"There are reports of orcs raiding the farms in the hills. I thought to ride out and-"

 He raises an eyebrow.

 "Really?"

 She nods.

"I thought twenty men would be force enough. The orcs of the hills are a craven, cowardly bunch, after all. They-"

 His smile widens.

"Have you forgotten what this day is?"

She cocks her head to one side.

 "Forgotten, my Lord?"

He nods, eyes twinkling with ill-concealed mirth.

"Today is the lady Gwyrith's dinner."

 She sighs.

 The lady Gwyrith's dinner.

 Of course.

 She shrugs.

 "Surely this is-"

 He shakes his head ruefully.

"The orcs of the hills would not match the lady Gwyrith's fury if she thought you had snubbed her. It would be most… imprudent."

 She snorts disdainfully.

"Most imprudent? Snub? It is all I can manage not to run the lady Gwyrith through some days. She is fat and stupid and boring and I-"

He shakes his head again, and the twinkle in his eyes is gone.

"I am sorry, my Lady. You must be there- King Elessar himself has asked it. To do aught else would not be proper."

She sighs, and swings down from her horse.

 "Proper."

He sees the hurt of defeat in her eyes.

 "Aye, my Lady. Proper."

He embraces her, and if he notices the tears that wet his jerkin Faramir does not mention it.

 The voice catches him unawares.

He turns to see his wife standing in the courtyard, a faint smile playing upon her lips. The question baffles him.

"There are reports of Dunlending attacks under the banner of Skrymir Foehammer against the Eastern pastures. I thought to ride out and-"

 She raises an eyebrow.

 "Really?"

 He nods.

"I thought twenty men would be force enough. Skrymir and his thugs are a craven, cowardly bunch, after all. They-"

 Her smile widens.

"Have you forgotten what day this is?"

He cocks his head to one side.

 "Forgotten, my lady?"

She nods, eyes twinkling with ill-concealed mirth.

"Today is the lord Gomrath's dinner."

 He sighs.

 The lord Gomrath's dinner.

 Of course.

 He shrugs.

 "But surely this is-"

 She shakes her head ruefully.

"The fury of Skrymir Foehammer himself would not match that of the lord Gomrath if he thought you had snubbed his dinner. It would be most… imprudent."

 She snorts disdainfully.

"Most imprudent? Snub? It is all I can manage not to snatch up my axe and brain the lord Gomrath with it some days. He is dull and fat and boring and I-"

She shakes his head again, and the twinkle in her eyes is gone.

He embraces her, and if she notices the tears that wet his jerkin Lothiríel  does not mention it.

It is later that night, and the feast is over.

She looks up at the stars.

Thousands of them, millions of them, untold stars…

Do they look down on her, she wonders?

Do they see her tears of rage, of frustration?

She never wanted this, none of it.

 None of it.
