They were creatures of legend, the Grey Riders. They were tales told to terrify the younglings, stories whispered by den mothers at night so brats would wake screaming from nightmares. They were a threat: 'the Grey Riders will come and get you!'
I never believed in the Grey Riders, but I passed the tale on; laughing at the younglings' terror. I never believed – until one day the nightmare came true, and I saw them. Warriors on dirty great horses, their faces like thunder and eyes as hard as steel, riding down on us with their swords in their hands …
