23. Doomsmen

T. A. 3019, Imladris

"If Aragorn survives this war, you will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated and Aragorn made King, and all that you hope for comes true, you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality. Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you, no comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death, an image of the splendor of the kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on, in darkness and in doubt, as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent."

Spent himself, Elrond stumbled wearily back into the Last Homely House.  He found himself in the library, somehow - unsure of the path by which he'd arrived.

Erestor was there, white-faced, stricken, looking as if he had seen a hundred Ages of the world rather than three.

"I ... heard your words in my mind."

The Master of Imladris said nothing.  Glorfindel and Erestor, having been with him so long, could often hear him from afar.  And if they had, so too had Elladan and Elrohir.

The counsellor stared into space, shivering.  "Words of great power.  Though I heard them only faintly, I am heartbroken."

Now his eyes found Elrond's, and he shakily continued.  "Only once before have I heard a doom pronounced with such terrible finality. I will not forget that day, should I live for another thousand yeni.  Let us hope that your pronouncement does not carry the same weight."

Elrond slumped into a chair, knowing that it did just so.  "For her, I am become Namo."

"Yes.  But while your family matters are your own affair, Lord, I must ask you, do you still have strength enough to lead us?  To lead our defense against the attack which cannot fail to come?"

"I have enough.  But another year here, perhaps two, is all that remains to me."

The counsellor nodded.  "Very well.  By that time either the Enemy will be defeated, or we will likely have all passed beyond need of... beyond all need."

He grasped Elrond's shoulder.  "All who dwell in this valley stand behind you, Elrond, even in your despair.  Glorfindel and I will lend you such strength as we can.  But do not ever speak like that again.  To hear such words once in a lifetime was enough."

Elrond did not answer or look up, so Erestor left his lord in, if not peace, at least privacy, and made towards his chambers.  But alone, the other words of Doom swamped him.

"Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death's shadow. For though Eru appointed to you to die not in Ea, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you. And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after. The Valar have spoken."
