3. A Once Bright Soul

What does the Eye see, in the black of the night? No visions of death and torture, that is there at a moments whim, no thoughts of incredible power, that is a waking truth, no dreams of success, for it is certain. What does the Eye see, in the black of the night?

Far, far to the west, a green island, banded by clear blue ocean, a glimpse of white shores on the far horizon. In the center of the island a tall Tower, as white as this one, here and now, is black, girded by a shining city unspoiled by either time or darkness. And small, at the foot of the Tower, almost invisible, a tree growing white and strong under the light of an ancient sun, with no stain upon its silver skin, no taint of shadow to mar its perfect beauty.
Untouchable, unfathomable. Closed forever, far beyond even the reach of dream. Anger and bitterness for all that has been lost, hatred and envy for what shall never be... And threaded through the cloth of a raven spirit, a strand of longing for what could be. Quelled ruthlessly by pride and stubbornness, those children of fear, the most subtle and relentless master of all. Coldly, fear twines itself around the space where a heart might have rested; not from an urge to dominate or claim; that battle was won long ago....Now there is not even a trace left within the darkness of what was a once bright soul.

Into the palantiri; with a purpose one may bend the stone to his will; but even when control is gone, the mind wields the stone, not the stone the wielder. Then the deepest desires and deepest fears are revealed; futures that may come to be or may not are shown. To the fearful and the fearless are shown terror, but the jealous, the prideful, and the bereft are shown power, and love is shown to the loving, the loveless, and the longing.
