4. Memories - by Starlight

Elves had always been wistful. Sam knew this. All that singing and story-telling was always about distant things. But this melancholy, and after the war, seemed uncanny. When he asked Mr. Frodo about it, all he got was, ‘Joy can also be bittersweet, Sam.’

He’d felt this in his heart, more than understood it, but after the lord Elrond called Merry by the name of Elladan, Sam knew. He’d never forget that face, so pained and sad under a mask of pleasant memories.

Did his Gaffer feel like that about him? He reckoned it was about time to get home.
