3. Letting Go

Two weeks, almost three. Back to the Houses, to studying plant lore and tinctures, preparing mixtures and remedies. All this, and neither of them could be saved. All this.

A quill, scratching out a new recipe. Gran’s recipes, now mine. Ma gave them to me. A gift, she said. Remember her like she was before. Baking and smiling when the whole family gathered.

A hat, hanging by the door. Granda’s hat, now mine. Uncle gave it to me. A gift, he said. Remember him always. Telling stories at the head of the table, and laughing.

Memory. It will be enough.
