1. Losing

I slip into the warm room, basket dangling off my arm. "Hello, Gran! How are you today?"

No response. But then, I did not expect one.

She has been in Car Lhaew for four months. We brought her here sorrowfully, as the last possible choice. She does not know us anymore, and cannot speak, or even meet eyes. I do not know what stole her mind, or what power had the cruelty to do so.

All I can say is that I, her second granddaughter, love her. And though she cannot say it, I know she loves me as well.
