1. I Ride

Across the open plain, leaning forward to a place I do not know

I ride the grey-coated bearer of dreams.

Beneath the stars, watching my advance to an unknown land

I ride the straining creature flecked with two beings’ sweat.

Before the wind, bending toward the river’s bend, across Anduin’s banks

I ride a companion, fated to my fate.

Under the shelter of trees, welcoming me to a safe refuge

I ride until both are exhausted, winded.

Within the haven of another’s arms, warm, relieved, arrived

I ride to journey’s end, slipping from the saddle of a fearless one.

Against my cheek, my mount’s breath comes fierce and hot.

Tested warriors, both.

Composed as a birthday gift for LJ user fileg.
