Stages of Frodo's and Sam's journey, traced across the memories of special places. A series of twelve vignettes.

Revised version of a story that first appeared in the fanzine 'Inside A Song' (2003). 'Never and Always' and 'The Wind's Tale' belong to the same continuum and should be read together.

"Oh, that won't do!" said Bilbo. "Books ought to have good endings. How would this do: and they all settled down and lived together happily ever after?" "It will do well, if it ever comes to that," said Frodo. "Ah!" said Sam. "And where will they live? That's what I often wonder." J.R.R. Tolkien – The Fellowship of the Ring: The Ring Goes South.

Author's Note: Rather than one continuous story, this is a series of 'snapshots' focussing on the different places that became meaningful for Sam and Frodo in the course of their travels and the evolution of their relationship. While I hope that all these fragments come together like the various bits of colour in a kaleidoskope, they also deliberately leave a lot of questions unanswered.
