Bucklebury

Type: Cities, Towns, Settlements

Region: Bree/The Shire

Location: The chief village of Buckland; extends partway up the slopes of Buck Hill, where Brandy Hall is tunnelled; location of the Bucklebury Ferry landing on the eastern side of the Brandywine River.

Description:

On the other side [of the Brandywine] the bank was steep, and up it a winding path climbed from the further landing. ... Behind loomed up the Buck Hill; and out of it... shone ... the windows of Brandy Hall....

Long ago Gorhendad Oldbuck ... had crossed the river.... He built (and excavated) Brandy Hall, changed his name to Brandybuck, and settled down.... The Brandybucks and their numerous dependants then began to burrow, and later to build, all round about. That was the origin of Buckland, a thickly inhabited strip between the river and the Old Forest, a sort of colony from the Shire. Its chief village was Bucklebury, clustering in the banks and slopes behind Brandy Hall.

It was some distance from the Brandywine to ... Crickhollow. They passed Buck Hill and Brandy Hall on their left, and on the outskirts of Bucklebury struck the main road of Buckland that ran south from the Bridge.

Since Meriadoc and Peregrin became the heads of their great families, and at the same time kept up their connexions with Rohan and Gondor, the libraries at Bucklebury and Tuckborough contained much that did not appear in the Red Book. In Brandy Hall there were many works dealing with Eriador and the history of Rohan.
