It has been told how ... Turgon ... discovered the hidden vale of Tumladen; and that (as was after known) lay east of the upper waters of Sirion, in a ring of mountains tall and sheer, and no living thing came there save the eagles of Thorondor.

The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Ch 15, Of the Noldor in Beleriand

Then Tuor looked down upon the fair vale of Tumladen, set as a green jewel amid the encircling hills; and he saw far off upon the rocky height of Amon Gwareth Gondolin the great..., whose fame and glory is mightiest in song of all dwellings of the Elves in the Hither Lands.

The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Ch 23, Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin

(Tumladen was afterwards the name of a valley in Gondor: The Return of the King V 1).
