Dunland

Type: Kingdoms, Realms, Lands

Region: Other Middle-earth

Location: West of the Misty Mountains, south of Eregion (Hollin) and north of the Gap of Rohan.

Description: In RotK, north and south borders of Dunland are roughly defined:
"Soon the dwindling company, following the Isen, turned west and rode through the Gap into the waste lands beyond, and then they turned northwards, and passed over the borders of Dunland."
In the same chapter when the party crosses the Swanfleet River, "they passed into Eregion."
RotK, Book VI, Ch 6, Many Partings

Other facts known about Dunland:
It is hilly, as Tolkien mentions the fells in TTT; also in HoMe 8, The War of the Ring, Aragorn describes the Dunlanders as 'An upland folk.'
It supports herd-beasts, since the 'herd-folk' of Dunland are mentioned in the Helm's Deep chapter of TTT.
The north of that area "was a green and pleasant country," according to the Many Partings chapter of RotK. It also mentions that in Northern Dunland "no men now dwelt."

In the Fourth Age Éomer 'became a great king and extended his realm west of the Gap of Rohan to the regions between Isen and Greyflood, including Dunland.'
Peoples of Middle-earth, Part 1, Ch IX, The Making of Appendix A, iii, 'The House of Eorl'
