Aldburg

Type: Cities, Towns, Settlements

Region: Rohan

Meaning: old (fortified) town

Location: A fortified hill-town, the ancestral home of Eorl the Young and his descendants; possibly the first settlement of the Eorlings in what became Rohan; located in the Folde, part of the King's Lands.

Description:

[The] Third Marshal... Éomer, had as his ward the East-mark with his base at his home, Aldburg in the Folde.

Unfinished Tales, Part 3, Ch 5, The Battles of the Fords of Isen: Appendix

Here [at Aldburg] Eorl had his house; it passed after Brego son of Eorl removed to Edoras into the hands of Eofor, third son of Brego, from whom Éomund, father of Éomer, claimed descent. The Folde was part of the King's Lands, but Aldburg remained the most convenient base for the Muster of the East-mark.

Unfinished Tales, Part 3, Ch 5, The Battles of the Fords of Isen: Appendix, Footnote

Cirion... gave Calenardhon... to Eorl and his people; and they sent north for their wives and children and their goods and settled in that land.... Thus Eorl became the first King of the Mark, and he chose for his dwelling a green hill before the feet of the White Mountains that were the south-wall of his land.

The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A, Annals of the Kings and Rulers: The House of Eorl,

Commentary by ~Nessime

Tolkien confirms the meaning of the element burg:

Norbury..... The form that Old English norð-burg would take in modern English place-names, meaning 'north (fortified) town'.
