Erkenbrand provisions Helm's Deep against attack

Event Type: Military/Strategic

Age: 3rd Age - Ring War

Dates: February 27, 3019 ~ February 28, 3019

Description:
An event in the aftermath of the First Battle of the Fords of Isen and the prelude to the Battle of the Hornburg; see those entries for overviews:

Erkenbrand of Westfold assumed command ... when news of the fall of Théodred reached him ...

Erkenbrand did not at once himself proceed to the battlefield. All was in confusion. ... He judged rightly that invasion was imminent, but that Saruman would not dare to pass on eastward to attack Edoras while the fortress of the Hornburg was unreduced, if it was manned and well stored. With this business and the gathering of such men of Westfold as he could, he was occupied for three days.

Unfinished Tales, Part 3, Ch 5, The Battles of the Fords of Isen

[3 March 3019, as Théoden's reinforcements arrive at Helm's Deep:]
The host ... now learned to their joy that Erkenbrand had left many men to hold Helm's Gate, and more had since escaped thither.

'Maybe, we have a thousand fit to fight on foot,' said Gamling ... the leader of those that watched the Dike. ...

[Said Théoden,] 'Are you well stored? We bring little provision, for we rode forth to open battle, not to a siege.'

'Behind us in the caves of the Deep are three parts of the folk of Westfold, old and young, children and women,' said Gamling. 'But great store of food, and many beasts and their fodder, have also been gathered there.'
