0. Hands of the King
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: Truly exceptional writing by the very talented Anglachel, marvelously nuanced and mature, enriches understanding of the main characters as well as enhancing grasp of Gondor's recent history. Utterly believable backstory of Denethor II as portrayed by JRRT.

0. The Mandrake Child
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: A really original idea with well drawn OCs and scenes, finely done straightforward prose in a style that is altogether modern but steeped in the otherworldliness of Mddle Earth.

0. Legacy
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: I'm repeating myself -- Anglachel is a great writer, and this plus the companion story On Merry Yule treat hobbits with maturity, compassion and rare intelligence. Plus the writing is fabulous.

0. While the Ring Went South...
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: A thrilling but realistic gap filler for a couple of weeks the Professor summarized in a few paragraphs. On my list because of the very entertaining and deliciously detailed style, the really creative ideas of 'what might have happened' and the characterizations. Funny, too.

0. Answering the Call
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: In a series of brief but compelling chapters, Docmon manages to capture a whole galaxy of alternative universes, with spare well written prose that is an excellent example of why 'showing' is much better than 'telling'.

0. Lie Down in the Darkness, Rise up from the Ash
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: Dwimordene's phenomenal dark AU is an example of lyrical writing style that weaves the fantastic and the poetic with the real. And it's just flat out a really good story.

0. In Empty Lands
Story Overview | Go to Ch. 1
Included Because: One of the prolific Larner's tales in progress... and I think one of her best, along with Murder Most Foul, in terms of original ideas and interpretations of "old" ideas.
