When we finally sought rest in the cold woods, our body heat dried the damp ground beneath us. At last I fell asleep, his broad back curved against my chest. I half-woke when he shifted restlessly; my arm lay across his waist. Perhaps its weight had roused him.
Sleep fled when, suddenly, he rolled over, his strong arms pulling me tight against him.
"Arwen," he whispered.
His eyes flew open. Surprised, he mumbled, "Halbarad. Sorry."
"No need to be sorry," I said with unexpected longing.
With unbearable sweetness, he kissed me. "Are you sure?"
In answer, I returned the kiss.
