Ringló
Type: Rivers & Lakes
Region: Gondor
Location: A river flowing southwest from the White Mountains through Lamedon; Ciril is its tributary, and the combined waters in turn join the Morthond River.
Description:
Swiftly then [Legolas] told of... the great ride [from Erech]... to Pelargir on Anduin....
'One day of light we rode, and then came the day without dawn, and still we rode on, and Ciril and Ringló we crossed; and on the third day we came to Linhir above the mouth of Gilrain.'
The Return of the King, LoTR Book 5, Ch 9, The Last Debate
... 'Ringló a river (joint tributary of Morthond in S[outh] Gondor' (Index). Its name is derived from Sindarin ring 'cold, chill' + lô 'fenland'. In The Rivers and Beacon-hills of Gondor it is said that 'there is no record of any swamps or marsh in' the course of the Ringló. 'It was a swift (and cold) river, as the element ring- implies. It drew its first waters from a high snowfield that fed an icy tarn in the mountains. If this at seasons of snowmelting fed into a shallow lake, it would account for the name, another of the many that refer to a river's source' (Vinyar Tengwar 42 (July 2001), p. 13).
