Instructions for Birthday Drabbling: instructions on the new system.
May 2005 birthday challenge
May 5 - paranoidangel (Nic): I promised Erin I'd ask for Elrond and Sam, so I'd like a drabble with those two in. My birthday's on the 5th (I'm quite happy for them to be late though!)
May 6 - RiverOtter: My birthday is May 6th. After much pondering and muttering, I am requesting encounters. Tell me about a meeting between any two characters - any Age or races or place. The more unusual or obscure, the better.
May 8 - Loremaster of Anorien: My fourteenth birthday is on May 8, and I'd love a drabble about the Denethor, Finduilas, Imrahil, Boromir, and Faramir during a celebration. It would be a happier moment for the rather troubled family who suffer painful losses and mischaracterization in fanfic.
May 9th - Radbooks: I know this is late as my birthday is tomorrow, but I would like a drabble about Aragorn and I.... oh, I bet it can't be an AU. Well, then I guess that's going to have to wait and be in my dreams and I probably don't want it to only be a drabble anyway. Seriously, I would like a drabble with Aragorn and Elrond or Aragorn and Eomer
May 13 - Pippin's Lass: I'd like drabbles on the hobbits (particularly Sam & Frodo) or Faramir (anything--with Eowyn, Elessar, as a child...). I'm also *quite* fond of horses, so anything with horses in is fine by me.
May 14 - Aliana: On May 14th I'll be 20, the age at which Aragorn learned the truth about his heritage. I'd like to hear about any LotR character making a discovery--large or small, funny or serious, that's up to you. Failing that, I'll also swipe Allie's request from March and say I'd not be averse to anything Houses of Healing, either.
Mat 23 - Eldamir: While I realize that I'm extremely late... I thought I might as well post this anyways, and see what happens! My birthday is on the 23rd, and I'd like a drabble about Faramir. I don't have anything too specific in mind, but nothing sexually explicit, please!
May 25 - Dwimordene: Did you know there's a world out there at 6:30 in the morning? I had forgotten. I dislike that I'm reminded. Ulk. To suit my mood, something about Castamir, Ornendil, and/or Eldacar. Something Kin-Strifish, which can include the arguments and tensions preceding the actual war. Post-war stuff would also be welcomed. Thanks!
May 27 - gronyats: Since I love History, I would enjoy a drabble about some interesting lore discussed between Elrond and Glorfindel.
May 30 - Starlight: I think this year I would like gapfillers or Middle-earth mysteries. Any type of gapfiller would do, set on whatever time period and the character of your choice. Anything that you have puzzled about, anything that draws your fancy, anything you wish had been expanded upon- they are all welcome!
If not, something set in Arnor would be lovely. Or, Eomer and Lothiriel. Or maybe something inspired by the Appendices?

For Starlight
For Starlight, 30 May
, we decided there were two options.
The first is that the bread was transported in from Cair Andros along with other supplies (and therefore was probably only relatively “fresh”) and that’s what this first drabble is about:
***
Supply Lines
Always he is startled by their sudden appearance from amongst the dappled tree-shade, interchangeable in green masks and gauntlets. Each week a different place, and perhaps a different man to guide him.
Watching them leave, with sacks unburdened from his ponies, he is a little envious. He has never seen the place they carry his goods, though he hears of its marvels. Yet if he does not know the route, he cannot betray it: orcs might watch all the paths he treads from journey’s beginning and end.
He prays the bread he brings builds strength to defend his beloved country.
***
The other option is that the bread was cooked using some form of solar oven. (And no, I don’t think the Rangers had pizza boxes - it’s just a very nice illustration of the principles behind solar ovens!) However, you would need a lot of solar ovens to cook bread for even 100 men every day. Having them spread out across the cliffs above Henneth Annûn wouldn’t be very “secret”. So we decided that there would only be a few loaves of bread a day, for the officers, and some kind of biscuit or bannock that would keep longer for the rest. And so that’s what this drabble is about:
***
Fair trade
Faramir breaks the bread, still warm. A bit of crust, a little butter: he savours the taste as he recalls the day’s reports. His gaze roves round the cave, singling out one man here, another there. So many have served well and deserve notice and honour. Yet he must choose.
He rises and crosses first to one man and then the next. With each, he trades loaf for bannock. The cold cake, heavy in mouth and stomach, tastes sweeter for the thanks given with it, and the devotion and promise of service to Gondor he sees in each man’s eyes.
***
Happy Birthday, Starlight!
Cheers, Liz

Canon quotes:
'Well, here is our refuge,' said Faramir. `Not a place of great ease but here you may pass the night in peace. It is dry at least, and there is food, though no fire.’
The Two Towers, LoTR Book 4, Ch 5, The Window on the West
…the evening meal seemed a feast to the hobbits: to drink pale yellow wine, cool and fragrant, and eat bread and butter…
The Two Towers, LoTR Book 4, Ch 5, The Window on the West
…the food provided by Faramir: dried fruits and salted meat, enough for many days; and bread enough to last while it was still fresh.
The Two Towers, LoTR Book 4, Ch 7, Journey to the Cross-roads

For Eldamir
*********
"My Lord Faramir....are you....quite well?"
Faramir looked up, and tried to identify the young guardsman through the haze of ale.
Iorlas? No...blast, what is his name?
"I am fine," he said, standing, catching the edge of the table to balance himself as he swayed dangerously. "I am.......fine."
The young man nodded. "Certainly you are," he said, and laid one steadying hand on his lord's shoulder. "It is late, my lord captain."
Faramir nodded his agreement, took a moment to drain his cup of the last drops of drink. "It is," he said, wondering when the room had begun to spin so. "I should be on my way."
If only he could remember which way the Citadel was.
"If you would permit me, my lord?" the guardsman asked. "I would walk with you -- I am not quite yet familiar with the roads of this circle."
Faramir waved a hand in drunken acknowledgement, though dimly he wondered how new this boy was, to still be confused by the path from the fifth circle to the seventh.
They walked in silence, the young man occasionally pointing out a broken cobblestone or puddle to be avoided, until they reached the Citadel itself.
"Ah, I know my way now, my lord," the young man said. "Thank you for your forbearance."
"You are ---quite welcome," Faramir replied, placing one hand against the wall to hold himself upright. It would not do for a young recruit to see him brought so low, even if the doors tilted most alarmingly in front of his eyes.
The young man eyed his lord captain for a moment, then spoke in a low voice. "He was a mighty warrior, my lord. We all grieve his passing."
Faramir meet the man's gaze, and saw there a pain that echoed his own, if only faintly. He could not do more than nod, for the tears he had been holding at bay threatened to choke him.
Ah, Boromir, Boromir!
The young man clasped Faramir's shoulder firmly. "Good night, my lord," he said softly, and left his lord to find his own way to his bed.
Re: For Eldamir
The young guard is excellent - so tactful and concerned for his captain: "I would walk with you -- I am not quite yet familiar with the roads of this circle." It's a very nice way to see him home safely, and allow Faramir to keep what remains of his dignity!

Re: Starlight - cruel and evil nuzgul slinger....
And IIRC the Drúedain in the Drúwaith Iaur come out and attack the remnants of Saruman's forces that retreat that way?
EdorasLass - what a very sweet drabble. I'm sure any guard would want to be that kind and thoughtful to poor drunk Faramir. Jay - getting drunk alone certainly isn't the best way to deal with grief! However, a wake with a few close friends who can all tell silly stories about Boromir....*throws out nuzgul in the hope it will latch on to someone*

Well, I think there should be very strict standards for drabbles -- how about a million?
And IIRC the Drúedain in the Drúwaith Iaur come out and attack the remnants of Saruman's forces that retreat that way?
Why, Liz, you cheeky geeky thing, you!
(P.S. I'm not ignoring your emails -- trying to clean the house for company... online only at short breaks, when housework makes me want to scream...)

Then I stagger toward the door, with these two unlikely brothers at my back.
This was a great image, and I think you have it right that poor Eomer would be almost more freaked out than the new father, LOL!

(On a Side note, just now I was reminded of "Fiddler on the Roof," when Tevvye says: We all have our own place in Anatevka... [or something like that. The gist of it being, everybody, in their own way, contributes to the community.])
Yes! That was exactly what I was thinking of: that my OC may not spend his time sticking swords into orcs, but what he does is just as important in its own way. I'm so glad that came across.
Glad you came back to so many nice presents and hope you have a Happy Birthday when it comes around!
Cheers, Liz
Happy Birthday, Dwim!
Re: Happy Birthday, Dwim!
Thank you very much, Starlight! It's nice to see Aldamir with a few lines, and it's an interesting take on Vinyarion's name, although I have this sense that it's actually Sindarin, not the quasi-Gothic Tolkien used for his Northmen. But on the other hand, why not? I like Aldamir's decision to rub his Northern heritage in the faces of rebellious others, even if it's not exactly diplomatic, heh heh.
One question: "He will die tonight... He's endured over-long"—I assume the "he" here is Castamir, yes? And what might that mean? I sense assassination schemes may be afoot...
[edit] Oh wait, never mind. *smacks self in head* "He"=Valacar, Succession. Brain fart, and I don't even get to blame it on pina coladas, sadly!

Super-late for Loremaster
And no title as yet. *sigh* I'm bad at titling drabbles.
Hope you had a good one!
The laughter of children floated down the hallway, and Imrahil wondered if his nephews always arose so early.
He heard Finuilas chastising them for being so noisy, and their apologetic replies, then Faramir’s accusatory whisper of, “I told you you were too loud.”
A fierce, but hushed argument ensued, just down the corridor.
Knotting a blanket round his hips, Imrahil waited for a lull in the conversation. When it came,he leapt into the hallway, roaring at the top of his lungs.
The boys ran, shrieking with laughter, as Denethor poked his head out of his room and smiled, seeing the ferocious monster that was attacking his sons.

Well Met
“Up the steps, turn left, down two doors…”
So intent on directions, and encumbered by a laden tray, the mumbling Hobbit didn’t see the Elven obstacle until it was too late. Gasping, he wheeled about to avoid a collision, crockery and consumables tilting to the stones in a lively clatter.
“Oh!”
Quick hands grasped cartwheeling arms, preventing the Hobbit from spilling along with the dinner. Steadied, Sam gripped the rail.
“Beggin’ yer pardon.” “My apologies.” One spoke over the other, then both laughed. They crouched together to gather broken crockery and strewn food.
“Thank ye kindly,” Sam flustered, “Master…?”
“Legolas.”
