December 4 - Azalais: I'd like Fellowship drabbles. By which I mean - any moments which show our beloved Nine together, in fellowship, basically. Active or contemplative, noisy or quiet, some or all of the Company, it's up to you - but I particularly like gap-fillers, which expand on the little moments JRRT didn't have time or space or inclination to go into detail about.

December 9 - Bridiliel: I have an unnatural infatuation with Dwarves and Numenoreans. If you could be so kind as to write something about these two races- or anything you fancy- for my birthday, I would be most humbled.

December 9 - Elana: I'd like to see your favorite character being tempted by the Ring. If that happens to be a canonical temptation, wonderul. If it's wildly AU, all the better. I'm fascinated by how the Ring works, not on a person's worst motives, but their best, and would love to see how that would play out with some of Tolkien's characters from various times and places.

December 15 - Lariren-Shadow: Hi, my birthday is on the 15th. If possible, I would like a drabble about Faramir and Éowyn. Any time, I don't care. Thank you so much for anyone who takes this up!

December 17 - LKK: My birthday is December 17th. I would love to see a drabble about Legolas or the twins Elladan and Elrohir. Or one involving all three. Any time period is fine as are additional characters. No slash though, please. One last birthday wish, I would prefer a happy drabble, if possible.

December 30 - Ainu Laire: I personally would love to see some Aragorn drabbles. Humor, action, angst, and drama are my favorite genres, but anything will do, although slash is not preferred. Anytime, any place, whatever will do fine, but I am a fan of AU, fill-ins, and pre-quest tales. Thanks! :-)

 

Sorry for the somewhat-late responses. I have been sick (fever and stomach flu- fun!) so I haven‘t had the chance to read these beautiful drabble presents. Dwim: Lovely drabble! Makes me wonder what type of experiences he has had with the Nazgul beforehand. Vistula: As I said before on the Yahoo list, absolutely gorgeous! I love the sense of mystery in it. And dreaming of younger, more innocent days… lovely. Tanaqui: Beautiful! I love younger Aragorn stories, and I could imagine how some who knew his real identity would want to tell him. I myself would love an Elven blade. Jay of Lasgalen: Another nice drabble! I myself have loved that scene, so definitely interesting to see it in Aragorn’s perspective. Again, my thanks! These are beautiful birthday presents, the best one could wish for!

 

I'm not sure people would notice the mega-drabble I already posted, since it was near the end of the last thread; though Allie did. Anyway, here it is again; hope the piece hasn't worn out its welcome... Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Lariren; here's another drabble, this time smack on your big day (hope you didn't already read it on the old thread) Raksha The Demon THE BOWER I awaken slowly, my body tired and aching and - not alone! There is a man in my bed, his arm wound tight around me, pinning me against him. I freeze in terror at the sight of his dark hair. It cannot be Grima; he is gone, he is dead. Then I remember, and see more clearly in the dawn's pale light. The man is my husband. My lord. My Faramir. We lie in my bed, in my flower-bedecked bower in the Golden Hall, on the morning after our wedding. I remember how he took me in his arms when at last we were left alone here. I had never thought to find such joy in giving my body to a man. I had never thought to lie worn but happy in his arms as he caressed me, murmuring my name. I fear almost that I dream, that I will wake again to find my bower dark and chill, while Grima stalks outside my door. I cannot help but shudder at the memory of being pent, a prize for men to covet and use. Faramir awakens, feeling my unease in the sudden coldness of my skin. He draws the coverlets up around my bare shoulders, and pulls me close again. I look at his face. Even half-sleeping, his raven hair tousled on the white pillow, Faramir is pleasing to my eyes; his features proud and noble. And I see for the first time how long his eyelashes are, how dark. I reach out to touch them. He seizes my finger lightly, then holds it against his mouth. I am willingly caught, but I can catch too! I kiss the warm flesh below Faramir’s neck, moving my mouth upward, and run my hands down his body. I sense the power there, the clean lines of shoulders and chest and the wondrous strength of his thighs. It is all mine to command, mine to love. My husband stirs. A deep sound, like a great cat purring, swells in his throat under my lips; then turns to a low chuckle. He shifts and kisses me. I lift my mouth to his, answering without words. We separate briefly, and I am warmed by the tenderness in Faramir’s eyes as well as the shared heat of our bodies. For the first time in many years, my bower is truly a home instead of a cage.

 

*swoon* As if I didn't do enough swooning last night over ROTK -EE. Swoonworthy Boromir! Swoonworthy Faramir (and Eowyn)! Swoonworthy howling-in-anguish Eomer! rereads "The Bower" A deep sound, like a great cat purring, swells in his throat under my lips *swoon* Thwunk. Faints dead away from swooning and exhaustion.

 

That was great, Raksha! There, now I'm in a puddle of my own as well... Oh, Faramir! *sigh* Starlight

Today she beamed. ‘Glad am I to see you, friend! It’s been too long.’ ‘I hope my lady will forgive me. I’ve been-’ ‘Busy, I know.’ ‘Remiss,’ he said. She smiled. ‘I’ve news from my brother. He’s well, happy. He even begs me go to him!’ His heart wrenched at this. ‘I can help, provide a horse, an escort-’ ‘Wait.’ Her eyes searched his, intently. ‘I won’t go.’ *** "And Éowyn did not go, though her brother sent word begging her to come to the field of Cormallen. And Faramir wondered at this, but he saw her seldom, being busy with many matters; and she dwelt still in the Houses of Healing and walked alone in the garden, and her face grew pale again, and it seemed that in all the City she only was ailing and sorrowful." The Steward and the King, RotK (1)The title comes from this quote, ibid: "She did not answer, but as he looked at her it seemed to him that something in her softened, as though a bitter frost were yielding at the first faint presage of Spring."

 

Ok, so here is my reply to Raska and Starlight: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These are both so good and I really should I have noticed when the alerts stopped coming that there might have been some new threads started. So that is way these thanks are late. As I read these my brain skipped off into a happy Faramir and Éowyn land and it won't come back. Oh well. Thank you so much, again! ~Lariren/Jenny

 

Hi Laire, Sorry to hear you've been sick. Tis the season to be . I'm glad you liked your drabbled, though. Makes me wonder what type of experiences he has had with the Nazgul beforehand. My answer is in Roots. If you're sick and with nothing to do, this might be ideal, because it's pretty long. *From the other thread, a quick comment for Alawa*: Weregild Really liked this version of Aragorn being tempted. "This I will have, as weregild for all"... Good thing Sam was there.

 

Hello All... I didn't realize how remiss I was in my drabble appreciation comments until I went back to read through them again and started making notes to do a general comment reply. I am so terribly sorry to all the talented drabble masters out there and I intend to remedy my sloth here. I apologize in advance if I miss someone. I really have greatly enjoyed all the drabbles recently!!!! Cheers, Vistula Here it goes.... Mother's Day Liz this is very touching. I really loved the feeling of sacrifice. Have you considered expounding on it for the Mother's Day challenge??? Seeking a Path Jay - a very nice gap filler. I love Aragorn's indecision at leaving Frodo "alone" with the others. It shows well his depth of responsibility. Deep Breath Before the Plunge RAKSHA - What can I say...it is a lovely moment. I like to see Faramir with bridegroom nerves. Well done. Weregild Alawa - Nice image of Aragorn's humanness, and the subtle temptation by the ring. I enjoyed the last line Aragorn welcomes the suspicion in those eyes. Passion Ann – Lovely moment between Denethor and Finduilas. I believe in their love and devotion and you show it here so well. Memory of Loveliness Forodwaith – Again, tender Denethor – I LOVE IT! I like this moment of fatherly advice. Yes, I think this is very in character with Denethor. Watch in Moria Gwynnyd – I responded to you on the HA list but wanted to say again how much I liked the imagery…particularly of hobbits tumbled like puppies and I can almost see/hear Boromir’s “I’m awake, I’m awake…*snore*” Moria gap fillers are some of my favorite drabbles to both read and write. Children of Aule; Children of Men Gwynnyd – I also responded to this on the HA list but wanted to reiterate that I enjoyed the image of childish wonder embodied here. Very nicely done. They Have a Cave Troll Gwynnyd – This is my favorite Boromir line from FotR…mostly because of his inflection and the look on his face. It is fun to hear the Troll’s POV. Ties Starlight – just when I think there can’t be so many tender and wonderful moments between Denethor and Finduilas, you give us yet another. Thank you for understanding a very misunderstood character! Beautiful. The Bower RAKSHA – I am generally not a Faramir/Eowyn fic fan…but my god you and the other drabblers this month have really given me food for reconsideration! What can I say about The Bower but *BIG sigh* and *ahhhhhh* - even I, a confirmed Sam fangirl couldn’t help but be taken in by this one. Very beautifully passionate and touching. Kudos! Melting Frost Starlight – An interesting and romantic take on Eowyn’s refusal to go to her brother. I REALLY enjoyed her calling Faramir “friend” for what is a lover and soul mate if not FIRST a friend. Again, I big thank you to all of you!!!

 

Vistula - "They have a cave troll" is one of my favorite lines in the FOTR movie - Borobean's delivery is marvelous. I loved Gwynnyd's drabble about the poor, hungry troll. Thanx for the kind words about my drabbles. Nervous bridegroom Faramir and happy new bride Eowyn were fun to write. I'm so flattered that a Sam-fan enjoyed them! RAKSHA THE DEMON

 

Raksha, If we were to give an informal award for "Sexiest Birthday Drabble of 2004", my nominee would be "The Bower", hands down! Bridiliel: I have an unnatural infatuation with Dwarves... Hello Bridiliel! Happy VERY late birthday (or early Yule if you'd prefer). I hope you had a wonderful one! You wanted something with dwarves so I've managed a whimsical little piece for you. Hope you like it. Cheers, Vistula ~~~~ Butterfly Kisses “Don’t move, Master Gimli!” Awakened from his garden rest, the dwarf froze at Sam’s exclamation. Hand flexing, he gripped the ax lying beside him, prepared to face whatever foe might threaten. Eyes closed he waited. The hobbit whispered, “Be very still…” He could feel hairs on his scalp rise in warning. What fell creature dared breach this sanctuary, now that Mordor was vanquished? A creeping feel across his cheek and brow spurred him; growling he gained his feet, ax held at ready. In a flurry and much to Sam’s dismay the gathered butterflies fled. “There now, you’ve frightened them off.”

After all the absolutely lovely Faramir/Eowyn drabbles lately, I was forced to grab my tiny little F/E muse out from under the desk...kicking and screaming all the way. The following is what came loose during the struggle. I hope you enjoy and that you had a wonderful birthday!!! Cheers! Vistula ~~~~~~ Split Loyalties The scream tore his heart as it pierced the silence. Only the hand on his shoulder stayed a hasty leap. Had it not been there, he’d have breached the door in two easy bounds. Curses followed, and invectives against his parentage. Under it all pattered the ceaseless clucking of the women. Not long now. He heard them soothe. The noise of distress reached its final crescendo; then a thin wailing eased his troubled brow. Losing patience, he assaulted the sanctuary, evading both keeper and midwife. “Well?” he demanded. “What news?” “M’lord Faramir, it’s a son.” “Yes, but how is she?”

Thank you Allie! I'm glad you liked them. My cousin, Molly Littlefoot came up with the butterflies on Gimli image for Butterfly Kisses and my Sam muse did the rest. As for Split Loyalties, how could I not be inspired with all the other lovely drabbles that have been posted recently about F/E. I thought the first child coming would end up being a nice progression from the earlier ones. Cheers, Vistula

Having been away from home for the past ten days, I'm catching up and I wanted to say that I've also loved all the drabbles this month, but particularly want to compliment Raksha on both of her Faramir and Eowyn drabbles, especially The Bower. Quite wonderful. (And Raksha will be pleased to hear the smut!Faramir muse seems to have meandered his way back to me at last!) Vistula wrote about Mother's Day Liz this is very touching. I really loved the feeling of sacrifice. Have you considered expounding on it for the Mother's Day challenge??? Thanks for the kind words. I do actually have quite a well developed set of ideas about Finduilas and I need to find time to write those stories, but various factors keep getting in the way. THE BOWER was fun; I wanted to show Eowyn as not only a happy young bride learning that sex can be fun; but also that she learns quickly the power that she will have over Faramir and the power their love will give her - as opposed to the powerlessness that she felt when being stalked by Grima. (I would imagine that Faramir will wake up feeling pretty powerful himself! in a basic masculine 'wow' moment - but you've got that ground covered pretty well in THE INFLUENCE OF KINDRED DESIRES) You just can't go wrong with Sexy/Sensual Faramir. This has been a wonderful month for Faramir drabbles, so many people writing the good Captain and his White Lady. RAKSHA THE DEMON

 

December 30 - Ainu Laire: I personally would love to see some Aragorn drabbles. I can't resist doing Aragorn! Just for you. It's not a very happy moment, but it is pre-quest and a fill-in as requested. Morgul Vale The tower was once fair, but only for Mithrandir would he look on her. The one road was unsafe for him to tread. He knew that a man strong, determined, clever and not afraid of heights could climb up unseen and look down into the unhealthy valley. Fear clung like ground fog in the hollows. Miasma wafted up from wind-rippled fields. But too little knowledge could be gleaned from above. He paused before the descent to check the extra skins of water strapped onto his back. Fastening a strip of cloth over his mouth, he started down, vowing, Never again. Happy Birthday! Gwynnyd

 

Miasma? Miasma? By some people's standards, you would be considered a naughty author for making me look that word up in the dictionary. But what I see is the absolutely perfect word in a drabble where every single word counts to elucidate the whole, and where the perfectly chosen word adds *more* than dozens of "simple" (i.e. familiar) words that, together, mean the same. I could sing paeans to your joy with, and usage of, words, but instead just let me say that they are truly an inspiration to me, Gwynnyd. Thank you for gifting us with your words! - Barbara P.S. Another pre-quest drabble for you. Chosen Aragorn stared at the ground, so certain he wouldn't be chosen that he failed to hear his name called. Mallor had to repeat it twice, his voice rising each time. "Pay attention, clothhead -- do you want to join the next company to the Lonely Mountain or not?" "Aye, sir!" "Don't let it go to your head," Mallor warned. "You're not the Chieftain yet. Keep your mouth shut and ears open; you're only there to learn." Halbarad saw the young Ranger's jaw clench and flicked him a sympathetic smile. "You'll enjoy the journey, lad; 'tis long, but not too toilsome."

 

Aww, a young rookie-Ranger Aragorn - this is great! I wonder how hard it was to go from being a sheltered Elf-fosterling to full-fledged Ranger. I wish Mallor were still alive (I suppose he could be if he's not much older than Aragorn) so he could turn up in Minas Tirith at the time of the coronation and regale everyone with tales of how King Elessar-Aragorn-Strider-Thorongil-Wingfoot used to answer to "clothhead". I make the question a joke, and you laugh but your eyes do not appreciate the humor. Nervous, you nearly drop the plate. You don't trust me, though I've given you no cause; somehow, I threaten your master where the others do not. When I'm near, you guard his side. Always, your eyes follow me, weighing my every move as though I were a serpent loose in the baby's nursery. You're charged with his protection and as a warrior, I laud your caution. Perhaps it wouldn't bother me so, if I weren't the only one.

 

Oh, no Forodwaith! Is this the journey I think it is? Heh heh. Alawa gets it in one.

 

Chosen This is great Forodwaith! I love to see images of a young and unsure Aragorn. He couldn't always have been the dashing and self assured ranger we have come to know and love! Cheers! Vistula
