Discussing: Sword care

How would someone in Middle-earth maintain the edge on a sword - would they use a stone? What other routine sword care would be needed?
Thanks for any help!

A sword needs to be kept clean and oiled to prevent tarnishing.
A stone-- a whetstone-- is a particular kind of stone with a fine texture. You oil the stone and use it to smooth out nicks from the edge of the blade, and sharpen the edge, and smooth out scratches.
But even simply handling the blade will result in fingerprints if it is not kept cleaned and oiled.
Blood is particularly bad for swords, and so they must be assiduously scoured after battle.
