March 2013 Birthday Cards

Birthday folks: Is your birthday in March and you would be delighted by a little story gift from your fellow HASA members? Then state your request here in this thread. To collect your birthday cards in one place, you can create a birthday workshop story.

Authors: Let yourselves get inspired by the suggestions - a chance to be creative and to make a fellow HASA member happy at the same time! Just like the recipients, you can collect the stories you've written in a  birthday workshop story.

And don't forget to add your birthday cards to the 2013 Birthday Cards Challenge.

Here's a short recap on how to do that:

  • Add each birthday present as a chapter in your story, using the story name (and the birthday recipient if there is room) as the story chapter. If you can't fit the person's name into the chapter title, just include it as the first opening line in the chapter.
  • Be sure you give each chapter a number and set the status to public so everyone can read it!
  • Since most birthday card stories are pretty short, you might include the birthday recipient's wish for what kind of story she wanted. Paste it from the forum.
  • In your story summary, you can list out who you've written stories for if you like.
  • It's up to you on the order you want to give your chapters - Alphabetical by recipient, order by month chronologically, newest first, etc.

In case you need help or have a comment, question or suggestion, please post it here or send me an e-mail - I'll do my best to help.

March, 14th - Elena Tiriel: ...I'm dealing with a very big, very difficult transition in my life.

So, if you would be so kind, I would appreciate a birthday drabble about transitions or passages. How did some of the folks of Middle-earth deal with changes in their lives or the lives of those who touch them?

It could be undertaking a major journey or quest, or moving to a new home, or marrying, having children, losing a family member, or aging, or acquiring new neighbors, friends, or enemies, or even a change in the weather (see the Nuzgûl of the Month!).... Any change, big or small, that interests you would be great!

Re: March 2013 Birthday Cards

Hello everybody,

My birthday is March 14, and I'm dealing with a very big, very difficult transition in my life.

Thank you!

- Barbara

Re: March 2013 Birthday Cards

(Author's Note: I'm sorry this is so early Elena, but it sprang on me unsuspecting and I couldn't let it go. 100 words about new homes and new husbands and new paint... and I hope your big difficult change is over soon...)

*

"Didn't I say I'd build you the finest hole in the whole Shire?"

Belladonna wanders entranced through the empty corridors his words unheard- here a niche perfect for a dresser, there a shelf made for Aunt Belinda's plates, here a room crying out for Father's second-best armchair…

 She comes back, nods.

 "It's perfect..."

~one last Tookish mischief before becoming a Baggins, just one~

 "…except for the front door."

 Bungo cocks his head, puzzled.

 "What's wrong with it?"

Her eyes flash bright as her smile as she gestures at the hill above.

"Anyone knows that green and blue will never do…"

Re: March 2013 Birthday Cards

A bit late... but Happy Birthday!

Planning

Did she have everything? she wondered. Packing for the journey itself should be easy, or would have been if it had been just herself and a small escort – except that this time it wasn't a spare pair of riding breeches, a bedroll and weapons; they were travelling in state, with about half of Rivendell along, and bringing pavilions, trunks, furniture, …

Arwen stopped her pacing and, though she knew she had packed everything, she went through her clothes chest yet again. Two months of travel. How she wished she could ask the Eagles to carry her to Minas Tirith now…

Re: March 2013 Birthday Cards

(Author's Note: Here's that sequel I threatened, Elena. More changes in the Baggins household for you- and I hope you had a nice birthday!)

*

"You know I was joking?"

Belladonna walks to where Bungo sits in her father's old armchair, perches on his knee.

He smiles.

"Blue was fine?"

 She nods, smiles back.

 "Yes. But that spare room.."

She whispers in his ear; his eyes widen.

 "So soon?"

She nods again and his eyes glow with un-Baggins-like glee.

"You realise I'll have to move Aunt Belinda's plates?"

The glow in her eyes matches his.

"Fiddlesticks to Aunt Belinda's plates. Send them down the hall to roll, for all I care!"

 He shrugs.

 "Your wish is my command."

 He won't.

 It's why she loves him.

Re: March 2013 Birthday Cards

(Author's Note: Me again, Elena- blame the fact that you asked for drabbles but I went and got myself over-inspired. Ah well, "third time pays for all, as my father used to say...")

*

Belladonna looks down at him as he sleeps and for the hundredth time- thousandth time? Hundred thousandth time?- she marvels at him.

Gammer Goodbody says something went wrong- that she must never, can never have another…

 …but Belladonna doesn't care.

 He is enough.

Bungo snuffles and snorks to himself in Father's old armchair, and little Bilbo joins in.

Like father, like son, Belladonna thinks- let him stay safe and warm and bored and boring for all his days.

At least, that is what the Baggins part of her thinks- the Took part adds a silent coda.

 "But not too boring..."
