You Can Never Go Back

1. You Can Never Go Back

I'm the only one looking back, of course.

Everyone else is bent over their oar, rowing for their lives, or desperately tieing things down against the rage of wind and ocean.

It's incredible.

From my vantage point in the crow's next, I see it all.

Like a giant's bath with the plug removed, the seas swirl in a deadly vortex, drowning the land of my birth eternally and irrevocably.

I know I should be looking ahead- looking to a new world- but I cannot tear my eyes away.

I was a minstrel in happier times- times long-dead even now, only days removed- and I tell no lie when I say that my songs charmed the hearts of all who heard them, but...

...but I shall never sing again as long as I live- who could sing of beauty and love and truth when they have seen as much death and horror and betrayal as we have, we lucky survivors of Illúvatar's wrath, we few, we unhappy few...

My kingdom is dead and drowned.

So are my songs.
