United they stand

1. United they stand

The sun was setting when Eärramë left. His mother had smiled knowingly at him while Elwing said her teary farewell to Tuor. Then they boarded the ship to leave. It came all at once, so suddenly. He disliked the thought of an empty house and a cold hearth. He sighed.

The couple on the ship leant against each other while they waved. He had no doubt they loved each other. It was obvious to anyone who watched that his parents were meant for each other. The love slipped out in unexpected little moments. A touch of her arm, a concerned glance, a smile. The way she teased him about his grey hair. The easy way he wrapped his arms around her slim waist. And now they were leaving. He sighed, again.

“Why are you sighing?” Elwing twined her white arm around his. Her eyes were still red from crying. He smiled reassuringly to her.

He blinked. “I think I will miss them.”

“I will, too.” She was silent, for a moment. “I do not understand why they leave. You are still young, and not quite capable of ruling Sirion. I know there is Lord Cirdan and King Gil-galad, but still…”

“And I suppose a descendant of the Maiar would know better, would she not?” He chuckled. “Perhaps you should rule, Lady Elwing.”

“Surely you jest!” she blushed and looked away, confused. “It is you who should rule, Lord Eärendil…”

“That would come to pass if you wed me.” He withdrew his arm and turned to face her. “For if you do not love me I will die of grief. Will you rule Sirion together with me, Elwing?”

There was a long pause.

Then she looked up and her eyes shone with love. “Of course I will wed you, Eärendil. I believe I will never love another.” Their lips met, and for the time they forgot about everything else, except their love, enveloping them in its comforting warmth.

He drew two silver rings out of his pocket. He took her hand and slipped it onto her finger. The he brought her hand to his lips and kissed it.

“I love you.” She whispered.

“And I you.” He smiled as they turned to face the Sea together. “I will protect you against our enemies, and in times of need I will always be by your side.”

"I am sure you will."

The wind caressed their joyful young faces, as they stood proud and unfailing, the two lines of half-elven united.
