2. Author's Notes

This story struck some as out of character because they saw no support in canon for these type of thoughts. I can see why someone might feel that way, and can only offer the following.
From the Silmarillion -
"They had, as it seemed, unending life, yet life became unendurable to them."

There are also several snippets that indicate that although the wraiths could never disobey Sauron, they are not mere automatons.

From Unfinished Tales -
"...they met messengers from Barad-dûr conveying threats from their Master that filled even the Morgul-lord with dismay." To me this indicates that the wraiths can have feelings that are separate from their master. Once I accepted that, the Witch-king wouldn't stop talking.
