Mother's Day Challenge

Challenge Details

Mother's Day approaches. We know how important a mother's role is; and yet, we see so few mothers, or women for that matter, throughout Tolkien's work. Their influence is always present, but their characters, their stories, very seldom take first stage. I thought it might be interesting to write about the ladies' influence in the lives of Tolkien's characters. Your challenge, therefore, is to write a story of a pivotial mother/child interaction. The story can be of whatever length is appropriate, but it must focus on the mother/child relationship. No restrictions on length, so long as the main focus is that mother-child relationship.

Subject matter aptly named by the title. It is character development/Dwim's background notes that span both Denethor's families--the one he was born to, and the one that he makes. For the purposes of the Mother's Day Challenge, the first half is all Denethor and his mother; then a middling portion is Finduilas, Denethor, and Nirthel; then the end is Finduilas and Denethor, with Boromir a discreet presence. Denethor, Finduilas, Ecthelion, Nirthel (Denethor's mother), and Boromir (sort of).

A different approach to Mother's Day. Short, darkly humorous poem written for the Mother's Day challenge. Inspired by my friend Elaine, who, when we were discussing Tolkien over breakfast a couple of months ago, said, "Where are all the mothers?"
