New Members Challenge 2005-2006
Challenge Details
This is a challenge for new members. By definition, a new member is any member who has been a member for fewer than four (4) months or who has written three (3) or fewer Tolkien fanfics.
Choose one of the following--there are three choices from "The Hobbit," three from "Lord of the Rings," and three from "The Silmarillion." Write a story on any of these prompts. There are no page limits.

The Hobbit:
1. The reactions of any inhabitant of Rivendell (an elf, Gilraen, or Aragorn) to Bilbo, Gandalf, or one of the dwarves.
2. Gollum tries to remember the answers to one of Bilbo's riddles, or vice versa.
3. The experiences of a man, woman, or child of Laketown (either named by Tolkien, or original) as they try to escape Smaug.

The Lord of the Rings
1. After the Council of Elrond, seven members of the Fellowship of the Ring still had to be chosen. Write a scene between any of the numerous people in Rivendell at this time, about who should be chosen to go on the Quest.
2. After the flooding of Orthanc by the Ents, Merry and Pippin had days to explore the the wreckage. Describe something that they might have discovered, or an encounter with the Ents or one of Isengard's other inhabitants.
3. After the War of the Ring, Beregond must face judgement for his role in saving Faramir. Write a story about this trial, or the thoughts of any of his friends (Faramir, Pippin, Bergil, or an OC, perhaps?) as he is led away to be tried.

The Silmarillion
1. Someone sees the Two Trees for the first time, at any point in their history. (This does not necessarily need to be in the Age of the Trees. An elf, or even a Ring-bearer's, reaction to seeing the Trees in a later age, after they were ruined by Ungoliant, is certainly allowed.)
2. Write about Maedhros' thoughts while he hangs from the cliffs of Thangorodrim, or Fingon's thoughts on finding him
3. Any interaction between a man of Numenor and either an elf from Eldamar or a man of Middle-earth at any point before the Akallabeth.
