The Chamber of Mazarbul in Khazad-dûm must have been a spectacular repository of history and culture. Makes you wonder what was in it. Makes you wonder who was responsible for maintaining it. In fact, it kind of makes you wonder: did it always exist, or was it established for the first time only when Balin's people recolonized the place? If they built on an original library, what did they find when they arrived? Were there old texts still intact after all those years? If they were beginning anew, what sorts of things, other than the chronicle found by Gandalf, did they think worth preserving?
