All Good Beasts

Challenge Details

They're tall, they're shaggy, they're grizzled; they're esteemed and battle-hardened members of Aragorn's elite ranger guard. Meet Lockjaw and Henbane, wolfhounds.

When the Battle of Dale hung balanced by a feather, Corbac son of Roäc tipped the scales. What vital piece of information did the canny young crow overhear?

The surveyors sent to Annuminas are in for a surprise: Evendim has a Watcher. But what sort of watcher would you find at the end of one of Ulmo's major arteries?

I started this challenge merely to help fend off a monster (literally) of a Beorn nuzgul that's been plaguing me, but the more I thought about the fauna of Middle-earth, the more I realized there's a ton of wonderful, underdeveloped material here. It's a vital part of Tolkien's mythos, and besides, it appeals to my sense of fun.

Give Beorn a wife, give Nargothrond a colony of bats, give Denethor a pet hamster named Thorongil. Give us the beasts!

Note: Fell beasts are also permitted. But the title was too cool to pass on...

Everyone knows that before the First Kinslaying, the Valar-lord Oromë gave the third son of Feänor, Celegorm, the gift of Huan the Hound. But tales are changed with time, and if you asked Oromë himself, and Curufin, Feänor's fourth son, you might get a different story.

A tale of Glorfindel, and his faithful steed Asfaloth. The meeting of elf-lord and elf-horse, or in other words, how Glorfindel chose Asfaloth for his mount, and Asfaloth stole Glorfindel's dagger and stuffed it down a rabbit hole. Semi-finalist at the 2004 Mithril Awards for Best Humor or Parody.

Ailurophobia: "fear of felines". This story discusses the fate of one of Tolkien's abandoned characters from the Lost Tales - this of Tevildo, Prince of Cats. From a feline nazgul Vulgarweed tossed at me and could well be listed as "black humor".

Inspired from a passage in Tolkien's Unfinished Tales regarding the life of Queen Beruthiel and her ten cats. According to this passage, Beruthiel was like an evil witch and the cats were her minions. But we never really hear her side of the story. Recommended to all cat lovers.
